  • A piece of paper you want to age. (I used regular 24lb laser paper. Of course, print your poem, passage of writing, and etc. to the page before you attempt to antique it.)
  • 1/4 cup of hot, black coffee. (Although I’ve only used coffee, I’m sure tea would work.)
  • A teaspoon or so of instant coffee. (I haven’t used fresh ground coffee or tea leaves, but they might work too.)
  • A baking sheet larger than the piece of paper you want to antique.
  • Sponge brush, or soft bristle brush.
  • Paper towels.
  • An oven.

  1. Pre-heat oven to lowest setting. For me it was 200 degrees.
  2. Crumple up your piece of paper into a ball, then smooth it out and place in your baking sheet.

I saw Martha "antique" paper a few years ago, and although I don’t remember her technique, I do remember that it was complicated. I played around with the general idea, though, and came up with an easy way to get the same aged look.

  • Let stand for a few minutes, letting the coffee crystals "blossom."
  • Using a couple of paper towels, dab the coffee up so none is pooled on the baking sheet or paper.

Supplies You'll Need for Aging Paper

  • Slide sheet into oven. Keep a watch on your project just in case of flame ups.
  • "Bake" sheet for about five minutes or until paper is dry. You can tell it’s drying when the edges of the paper start to curl up.

Pour hot coffee over your paper. Spread coffee over/around your paper with a sponge brush. (I puddled a little too much in the lower left corner in the picture below.)

Frame your antiqued poem or passage for a great-looking piece of cheap art

Do you know the writing materials used for the first Holy Bible?

Papyrus "paper" was from the Egyptian papyrus plant. Scrolls of papyrus were rolled out horizontally rather than vertically. They were about 10 inches high and up to about 35 ft in length.

    Papyrus
The use of papyrus as a writing material originated in Egypt and has been traced back to A.D. 2500. In the New Testament days it was still most popular writing material.

    Vellum and parchment
Animal skins used as writing material are known as vellum and parchment. Some such leather scrolls are still in existence and date back to 1500 B.C. Vellum refers to the best quality animal skins and came from calves, while parchment refers to all other animal skin used in paper making such as bulls and goats, and was inferior in quality to vellum.

    From Scrolls to Books
In Old Testament and New Testament times the papyrus paper was made into scrolls by joining the Papyrus sheets to each other. Later on papyrus sheets were used in book form, when books replaced scrolls.

    Pens
Pens were simply made from dried reeds which had been cut to a point and then carefully slit at the end. Quill from bird feathers later replaced reed pens.

There are a few different methods for how to make paper look aged. I’ve heard but haven’t tried that you can age paper with coffee. Next, using a standard cheap paintbrush lightly brush a bit of an antiquing glaze over the stark white copy paper. Your new printer paper is starting to appear more like old looking paper now. Since the lavender oil bottle is brown I don’t want the label too dark, but just enough so that it doesn’t look crisp and clean and white. If any of the glaze looks too dark in an area or if you can see brush strokes, just wipe it with a baby wipe to blend it in.

This entire process of aging paper literally takes only a few minutes. You will most likely spend more time adjusting your paper size than actually making the paper look old.

First, find an image that you want to age on paper. This vintage style label design can be ordered online. I found it in this online shop (HERE), along with so many other images. There are websites where you can pay for an image and then have the rights to download it and use it. This is important when trying to stay away from copyright infringement violations *wink*. The few dollars it costs is worth it in my book, with that being said please do not take and use this image.
